Group B changed completely on Matchday 2. Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar was their first ever men’s World Cup victory and the most emphatic performance of the group so far. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick, Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored, and Qatar added an own goal. The result puts Canada top on goal difference and gives Jesse Marsch’s side a simple brief against Switzerland: avoid defeat and win the group.
The Canadian celebration was tempered by Ismael Kone’s broken leg, suffered after a second-half tackle by Assim Madibo. Kone is out for the tournament, while Alphonso Davies is still working back from a hamstring injury and is expected to be managed rather than thrown straight into the XI. Nathan Saliba is now the natural replacement in midfield after scoring from the bench against Qatar.
Switzerland also responded strongly after their opening draw with Qatar. Murat Yakin’s side beat Bosnia 4-1 with a late surge, including a Johan Manzambi brace, a Ruben Vargas goal and a Granit Xhaka penalty. The key is not to overreact to the 6-0 scoreline alone. Canada were excellent, but Qatar finished with nine men and were already unraveling. The more actionable angle is the final-day game state: Canada can win the group with a draw, Switzerland must win, and the home crowd is in Vancouver. That makes Canada group winner at -165 more attractive than Canada moneyline in the match market.
